Gunman kills one in shooting at Wyoming college: report

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Honda Motor Co introduced its redesigned Civic sedan only a year-and-a-half after a major model change of the best-selling compact car in the United States. Even Honda admits that the 2012 Civic, introduced in the spring of 2011, missed the mark. For a company that prides itself on rock-solid reliability, it was a shock last summer when influential Consumer Reports ranked the Civic dead last in a field of 12 compact sedans it tested. Sales of the new Civic, a 2013 model, will start this week and the refreshed car was shown off on Thursday at the LA Auto Show. ...

Chandler Riggs and Joel Courtney Joins Stephen King's 'Mercy'

The Walking Dead star Chandler Riggs and Super 8 star Joel Courtney are joining the cast of the Stephen King screen adaptation, Mercy. In the adaptation, which is based from a short story by King called "Gramma" (from his collection of short fiction, "Skeleton Crew"), they will play two brothers who along with their mother visits their gramma who unknown to them is a witch who made a deal with black magic in the past. This evil deal, of course has grave consequences.

Peter Cornwell (The Haunting in Connecticut) is at work behind-cam on the movie of which script was penned by Matt Greenberg, who, if we may remember, helped in working the script for 1408, another King adaptation. Jason Blum, McG and Mary Viola are all on board as producers. Frances O'Connor who recently appeared in the Willem Dafoe adventure-drama The Hunter assumes the role of the mother.

All details are undisclosed of the moment, but as they emerge we're posting. Check back some time.

Elderly Pharmaceutical Insurance Coverage Funding Restored in ...

In January, May's copayments will return to $20 each, the same copay he was charged in 2011.

After cutting the EPIC budget by about $12 million to help erase a $10 billion state budget shortfall, the legislature earlier this year restored EPIC funding for Jan. 1 to March 31. What will happen when the 2013-14 fiscal year begins April 1 depends on Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) and the state legislature.

Before the cuts, roughly 190,000 low- and middle-income New Yorkers 65 and older relied on the program to supplement their Medicare Part D and any prescription insurance coverage they had.

Cut was "devastating"

Under the scaled-back program for 2012, EPIC was free but was limited to low-income people and did not contribute toward copays until a Medicare enrollee and his or her insurer had spent $2,930 on prescriptions, the point where the Medicare Part D "doughnut hole" begins.

The changes were "absolutely devastating to many seniors, especially those with serious or chronic illnesses," said Cathy Roberts, who works on health care access issues at the Empire Justice Center in Albany.

For instance, Muriel Kenitz, of Galway, stopped taking one of her prescriptions, a hormone medication to help sharpen her memory, relieve severe headaches, prevent osteoporosis and lower cholesterol.

The news of the EPIC restoration is a "major relief," said Kenitz, who turns 74 this month. "But all that money I lost [paying for other medications] I won't recoup."

Kristin Legere, AARP New York communications director, said people reported being shocked when they went to a drugstore to pick up a prescription and found the price had skyrocketed, sometimes by hundreds or thousands of dollars.

Most EPIC enrollees paid about $875 in additional out-of-pocket costs for their medications in 2012, an AARP New York analysis found.

May, a retired rabbi in Rockaway, Queens, said he had heard about the cuts but didn't realize the full significance. After his shock at the pharmacy counter in January, May got angry. Then he got busy.

He participated in an AARP New York tele-town hall meeting in which the EPIC cuts were discussed. He also called his legislators to express dismay over the cuts, spoke at community organization meetings and talked to friends.

Next page: The cuts triggered a rigorous lobbying effort. ?

Smart Senior: Senior Health and Fitness: Winter Walking

?I love fall and winter!? I wouldn?t like living where the weather is the same all year around. ?The beauties of spring, summer, winter and fall are magical and need to be experienced to be believed.? The magic ends when accidents happen.? We can?t ignore the fact that incidents of slips, falls, and automobile accidents increase dramatically during the fall and winter months. ??It is hard to resist taking a walk on a beautiful fall or winter day, but soggy leaf piles and roads covered with snow and ice can be treacherous.

?Be careful whether you walk for exercise or just need to get safely from point A to point B.? You can?t stay indoors all winter long.? You can?t let winter hold you hostage.? It is important to be prepared and be extra mindful of your surroundings.? With a little extra effort you can keep on walking and enjoy the crisp sunny days.?

Be careful.? It is slippery out there.? Every block will present a new challenge.? Ice-free sidewalks are okay, but walking on packed snow requires more caution.? Take your time, walk slowly and take shorter steps on icy or snow covered sidewalks and streets.? Be extra wary of car traffic.? Inexperienced drivers may not be able to stop at crosswalks or may skid out of control when applying the breaks.

?It is dark later in the mornings and it gets dark earlier at night.? Do your walking during the nicest parts of the day (if you can).? I?ve had to move my 7-8 p.m. dog walk up to 2:30 in the afternoon and that is quite an adjustment for me.?? Keep warm.? Dress in layers, wear gloves, and a warm fuzzy head cover.?

Trade your sneakers in on good supportive walking boots or trail shoes.? They will provide better traction, and if you pick your route carefully you should be able to enjoy a nice winter outing.? Consider a walking stick with an ice-pick tip and remember that you can get slip-on traction devices that will fit right over your shoes.?? If you are walking for exercise you might want to reverse your normal route so that the wind will be at your back on the way home. ?Facing the wind when you are already exhausted can turn a pleasant outing into a nightmare. ??Don?t put your exercise routines on hold during fall and winter months.? If you don?t feel comfortable walking out of doors try mall walking, join a gym, or buy walking videos that you can do in? your own living room.? Enjoy the pleasures of walking every month of the year.

'Iron Man 3' Stills Crash-Lands Online

Over their official site, Marvel has released four fresh stills for Iron Man 3. See them all as you read on to the very end.

(The stills aren't what exactly you would expect them to be, but at the least of things we figured Rhodes is Iron Patriot, which is totally wrong [we all know Rhodes is War Machine], but they must have things in mind to take a step forward to this route, so...as cliches always tell, we have to wait and see.)

Under Kiss Kiss Bang Bang director Shane Black's helm, Iron Man 3 follows Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.), as his life and those who are close to him are threatened, having his identity as Iron Man out in public. The Mandarin turns the industrialist down, leaving him to fight back with very limited resources and to save the things that are most important in his life: Pepper (Gwyneth Paltrow) and the safety of mankind.

To be released internationally on 3D on May 3rd, 2013.

Groupon CEO Decision - Business Insider

Michael Seto for Business Insider

Yesterday, three news stories appeared that reported essentially the same thing:

Board members at Groupon were discussing firing the company's CEO, Andrew Mason.

These news stories did not cite each other. Rather, they cited "sources" close to the situation. (Kara Swisher at All Things D broke the story.* Then Bloomberg and the Wall Street Journal followed. Kara Swisher is a great reporter and may have flushed out the information, but sources confirmed it--not just to her but to the WSJ and Bloomberg*).

Often, when separate news stories contain essentially the same information and don't cite each other, it means that a person or company wants the information out there.

In the case of the Groupon, it was not immediately obvious who stood to gain from the Andrew Mason information.

It didn't help Andrew Mason, certainly.

And it didn't help the company, whose leadership was suddenly thrown into limbo.

And it didn't help the board as a whole, which looked like it was stabbing its CEO in the back.

It seemed unlikely that high-quality publications like All Things D, Bloomberg, and the Wall Street Journal would run with secondhand information. So it seemed the information had come directly from (or at the behest of) one or more of the board members who are discussing firing Mason.

Judging from the Wall Street Journal's story, which cited "fractures" and "clashes" between Andrew Mason and board members Eric Lefkofsky and Brad Keywell, it's not hard to guess who those board members might be.

In any event, leaking information like that was a cutthroat thing to do.

And it put Andrew Mason in an incredibly awkward position.

For one thing, it forced him to address in public the question of whether the board might fire him, which he did at our conference today in New York. Mason had a good answer for that question: With the stock getting clobbered, of course the board was discussing whether he is the right guy for the job. But boards generally have those discussions in private, not in newspapers.

Importantly, if everyone on the board wanted to fire Mason, there would have been no need to leak the story. The board could just have canned Mason at the upcoming meeting and announced the news when it was a fait accompli. So it seems likely that a board member or two want to oust Mason and other board members don't--and that the ones who do want to oust him blindsided him.

(That was the impression I got in our interview today, by the way--that Mason had been blindsided. He was articulate and composed, but he also seemed almost resigned to the fact that he was going to get canned).

It will be interesting to one day get the full story.

It will also be interesting to see how the situation plays out.

And inasmuch as someone on the Groupon board apparently wants us to have a public discussion about whether Andrew Mason should be canned, let's go ahead and have one.

The fire-Mason case is clear:

  • Groupon's stock has had an abysmal year since its IPO a year ago.
  • Groupon's international business is imploding.
  • The growth of Groupon's core daily deal business has slowed to a crawl, and the product still clearly needs tuning (there are too many anecdotal stories of merchants not liking the product)
  • There has been some senior management turnover
  • A big part of the problem at the company is external perception (which starts at the top)
  • Andrew Mason has only a few years of business experience and is now responsible for turning around and managing a massive global corporation, winning over Wall Street and the media, instilling passion and confidence in tens of thousands of rattled customers and employees

The give-Mason-more-time case, however, is also compelling:

  • Groupon has likely grown faster than any company in history--from zero to $2.5 billion in revenue, 12,000 employees, and profitability in less than four years
  • Groupon is still growing
  • Groupon is making money
  • Groupon has crushed almost all of its competitors
  • Groupon has successfully launched a new business--merchandise--that is already doing more than $1.5 billion of annualized revenue
  • Groupon's North American business is still doing well--it's the acquired companies in Europe that are the problem
  • Mason has a lot left to learn, but he is learning quickly
  • All companies go through rough periods.?

What decision will the board make? What's the right decision?

That's a tough one.

In my opinion, it depends a lot on Andrew Mason.

Andrew Mason has led Groupon this far (and very few observers appreciate how spectacularly hard that has been to do). If Andrew Mason wants to fight to keep his job, commits to learning more about how to run a multi-national corporation and communicate better with Wall Street and the media, and remains excited and passionate about his job, then he should be given more time. Not an indefinite amount of time, but more time.

If, on the other hand, Andrew Mason has learned that managing a huge global corporation, dealing with the media and investors, and continuing to build and manage a top-notch senior executive team is just not as much fun or as rewarding as leading Groupon in the early years, then he should step aside (or get canned).

This, by the way, is not a new situation for a founder-CEO to find himself in.

The skills and leadership ability required to grow a startup are different than those required to turn around and manage a vast global corporation. And many talented entrepreneurs and executives decide that they prefer one to the other.

I have huge respect for Andrew Mason for doing the interview today. Most CEOs would have cancelled the conference appearance. I also have huge respect for what Mason and his team have accomplished at Groupon over the past three years.

If Mason wants some more time to prove himself and fix Groupon, the board should give him more time.

If he doesn't, I hope he resigns quickly, helps hire a great new CEO, and then eventually gets more credit for building the company than he has to date.

The reason that leak was so ruthless, though, is that it will be hard to recover from.

Groupon's CEO has been placed in limbo.

At today's board meeting, the board will have to do and then say something. And even if the board decides to give Mason more time, everyone at the company (and in the world) will know that that's what they're doing. And they will also know that Mason's grace period will be short. That will hurt Mason's authority, both internally and externally, which will make it even more difficult for him to succeed.

(Yes, the board could put out a statement saying that it has "complete confidence" in Mason or something, but under the circumstance, this would be laughable.)

To resolve the situation in Mason's favor would require the resignation of the board members who want him gone. But even this wouldn't fix it. Everyone would know why these board members were quitting--because they had lost confidence in the CEO--and that wouldn't help Mason's authority, either.

Even if Andrew Mason wants to fight for his job, in other words, it will be a tough fight to win.

Whoever stabbed him in the back knew what they were doing.

SEE ALSO: Groupon Stock Soars After CEO Andrew Mason's Conference Appearance

* To be clear: I'm not suggesting that this story was actively "placed" with Kara Swisher. Swisher is an aggressive and experienced reporter, she is deeply sourced at Groupon, and this was a great scoop. Andrew Mason was originally scheduled to appear at our conference on Tuesday. On Monday evening, Groupon canceled his Tuesday appearance and did not immediately confirm a Wednesday appearance. Normally, late cancellations like this mean something. Swisher likely assumed that this one meant that Mason was in trouble and called Groupon sources to confirm that. The point I am making is that at least two of Swisher's Groupon sources elected to say that the Groupon board was "seriously discussing" firing Andrew Mason. The sources did not have to say that. And they then did not have to say the same thing to Bloomberg and the Wall Street Journal. The sources could have said nothing. Given the sophistication of some of the people involved, I believe the sources knew full well what would happen if they confirmed Swisher's perfectly reasonable questions. They don't call it "boardroom intrigue" for nothing...

Syrian hospital officials say twin car bombs near Damascus have killed at least 20 people

With 47 percent of the popular vote, Mitt Romney may become the president of nothing more than Ironystan. Yes, the final general-election tally is trickling in and, as fate would have it, Romney's total might look more like that mythical number after all. Well, according to David Wasserman of the Cook Political report, it's more like 47.49 and dropping, which, of course rounds down to 47 ? the same percentage of Americans?he said were moochers and takers in a video?that was one of the nails in the coffin of his presidential campaign.

Based on a book by Hiroshi Sakurazaka, All You Need Is Kill is the looping story of one Bill Cage (Cruise), who has to fight against an extraterrestrial race over and over as he relives the last day before getting killed. I hear a Source Code premise in here.

Opening on theaters March 7th, 2014, the movie is directed by Doug Liman and is penned by Dante Harper. More news as we hear more.

Ian McKellen On Reprising Magneto in 'X-Men: Days of Future Past'

A few days back, X-Men and X-2 director Bryan Singer announced over Twitter that Ian McKellan and Patrick Stewart, along with some actors from the prequel X-Men: First Class will be reprising their roles in the upcoming Warner Bros. superhero blockbuster, X-Men: Days of Future Past. The Huffington Post had a conversation with The Hobbit actor Ian McKellen who plays the older version of Magneto. Here's summing up the interview.

"What a gas!" said McKellen. "I mean, Patrick Stewart and I have been have just been playing "Waiting for Godot" throughout England and in the West End of London. So, we've stayed in touch. We can't believe it [laughs]. I thought these were Fassbender and McAvoy's parts, but -- no, no -- we're back. We'll give them a run for their money. I mean, I haven't read the script, so I don't know how much we've got to do. But, to be back in that world, and for Bryan to be doing it -- with all the success he's had in the meantime -- it's wonderful. Wonderful."

Magneto's younger version is played by German-Irish-actor Michael Fassbender (Eden Lake, Prometheus). McKellen is later asked on what are his thoughts on Fassbender as Magneto. Here's what he said: "I thought he was exactly that: first class. Excellent... I thought he was better than me. But, we weren't quite playing the same character because he was so much younger than me."

Whatta nice guy, that McKellen.

Based on the 141st and the 142nd 'Uncanny X-Men' comics, Days of Future Past will concern the X-Men in an alternate future wherein an important part of the government is killed, triggering a chaotic battle involving sentinels. The Chris Claremont and John Bryne comic book is translated into film by screenwriter Simon Kinberg whose most credible work is the recent Sherlock Holmes

The fifth picture of the franchise is hitting screens July 18, 2014.

TV: HBO Develops Neil Gaiman's 'American Gods' into 6-Season TV Series; Gaiman Currently Penning the Script

HBO is currently developing Neil Gaiman's acclaimed novel, "American Gods" into a TV series. The plan is to have a six-season run, which will have ten to twelve episodes, approximately forty-million dollars in budget and a ton load of - hopefully - skillful use of CG. American Gods is targeting a premiere some time next year, which explains how Gaiman is already working on the script.

The novel, which was a massive success in both commercial and critical airwaves, received a lot of good comments from critics and awards from gigantic cultural initiatives. It's a depiction of Gods and other myth figures living on modern society, whose powers greatly depend on how much belief people put upon them. Greco-Roman, Nordic, Hindu, Egyptian, and Judeo-Christian pantheons will be in sight, but the book sprung up some new figures to eye on, which what makes the series - personally speaking - exciting.

Tom Hanks (Cloud Atlas) and producer Gary Goetzman (Larry Crowne) are involved and taking production job, which only mean their production company Playtone should appear around somewhere.

Gaiman, as aforementioned is penning the script and via Twitter, he announced that he's at work on the pilot episode script, which means we're in full swing. As HBO novel book-to-small screen deals go, fans have every reason to celebrate as dirty elements such as sex, violence and drugs shall be around, especially if we think about how they went with popular adaptations like The Game of Thrones and True Blood.

More news as we hear more.

How To Make It Last: Three Keys To The Long-Distance Relationship

This isn?t about love. But it is about a successful, long-term client relationship ? how it has evolved and matured ? and how, with constant refocus, it keeps moving forward.

Graphica has partnered with Crown Equipment Corporation for a long time. Creative Director Drew Cronenwett remembers when he arrived at Graphica as a rookie designer 26 years ago: a Crown collateral piece was his first project.

Since then, Crown has manufactured new equipment, developed new programs, and experienced all the ups and downs any large multinational company would. Of course, we?ve changed, too. But despite all the changing, we?ve consistently delivered spot-on strategy and design. Key #1: Build your relationship on a strong foundation.

Now, nearly three decades later, Drew heads up Crown Europe for Graphica. In fact, he recently returned from a three-week trip to Crown Europe headquarters in Munich, Germany. He ate wiener schnitzel and took some incredible photos. But, most of all, he drove reach trucks, toured warehouses and manufacturing facilities, and talked about upcoming products and strategy with his Crown counterparts ? I?m pretty sure he shared a few beers with the team, too. Key #2: Stay in touch. Stay informed. Nothing can replace face time, and even if you have to travel thousands of miles, let them know the relationship is worth it.

In part, what Drew discovered is that Crown?s needs have changed. As they look to the future, they intend to incorporate more technology and software into the design of their heavy equipment. In addition, they plan to approach their clients ? including those in Russia, the Middle East, and even Africa ? with a new way of marketing their products.

New technology? Strategic ways to reach your targets? Emerging markets? We?re listening. In fact, we?re already working on it (check out our recent Ektron certification). Turns out, Crown?s interests have changed much like Graphica?s capabilities. So Drew hit the ground running once he arrived back stateside, and big new projects are already in the works. Key #3: Listen. Respond. Be prepared to do what it takes to move the relationship forward.

Dear Abby has nothing on us. We value our client relationships, we invest in them and we know how to make great relationships, like that with legacy client, Crown, grow and get better with time. Most importantly, we know that healthy relationships are the only key to good business.

'[REC] 4: Apocalypse" Teaser Trailer is Here

[REC] 4: Apocalypse is in full swing, being the fourth and (probably) the last entry to the infamous zombie franchise, [REC]. I have followed the series since the first in 2007 and this year's third installment. And with the third's letdown this better not suck up (this could serve as an open letter to co-creator Jaume Balaguero). Filmax International just released the official teaser trailer for the film and you can see it below.

The teaser doesn't show any new footage but everything from the first and second film that shown reporter Angela Vidal (Manuela Velasco), but boy do I want to see it so bad.. The third one was campy as hell (although fun in bits), so I get all cross-fingers in this one - I'm rushing to the theaters first thing nonetheless. [REC] 4: Apocalypse follows Vidal, the only survivor of the incident, as she commence to exit her ordeal, unbeknownst to the authorities, she leaves with a strange strain of infection. She goes under quarantine in a high-end security facility, but we all know where this is headed right? Zombies. Zombies.

Hearing the premise it feels like the third one is a throwaway picture, realizing that this is the intended sequel. As far as the usual trilogy goes, when the first two films were neat (in which [REC]'s case is true), the conclusive chapter is, somehow, of the same norm.

The movie is likely to start some time next year. More news (plus side thoughts) as we hear more.

Review: 'Stolen' Doesn't Exactly Steal The Show

With its generic premise and sadly written script, it's not quite surprising how Simon West's Stolen - cliche approaching - doesn't exactly steal the show. The setup is pretty simple and stolen, in which Nicholas Cage, in one of his dull and tiresome performances, play as Will Montgomery, an expert thief who, eight years after a heist gone bad, sets out to get his daughter Alison (Sami Gayle, Detachment) held captive by his former accomplice and friend Vincent Kingsley (Josh Lucas). Captor demands ten million dollars in the next twelve hours.

By now, one will deduce that this setup, in truth, rings a bell. Fly through the pages of your thesaurus at home, browse through letter 's' and find the word Stolen and you'll find Taken. The movie's hackneyed (if not stolen) plot is of course modified an escape to a case called copyright infringement. But this aside, the movie is less unabashed, less violent and less effective - damn, this movie is a toned down version of Taken. It's not quite right to compare, but it's hard not to. Liam Neeson's Taken is arguably a better pick, if we're talking paternal angst and car chases and foot chases and all, because simply, Nic Cage's version seem to have very little of these - father-and-daughter relationship seems to be dramatically underwhelming even with the low norm that the genre requires, the violence feels short and logic seem to disappear every now and again for irregular intervals.

Simon West's (The Expendables 2, The Mechanic) taste in stunts are quite neat, but it doesn't aid the fact that the movie's scribe David Guggenheim (Safe House) seem to have lost faith in logic. Lucas' performance as the demented kidnapper is a little too sharp, but all the while, serviceable; Silk Spectre from Watchmen (Malin Akerman) is here to give a nice and easy feel to the screen. The fun element here is the hysterics of a pair of FBI overthinkers (played ludicrously well by Danny Huston and Mark Valley) who, somehow, attached to this obsession on Will. They are lousy FBI agents, albeit in this uneven of a heist-thriller, they would come up with smart ideas to be at least a step closer to the badly-groomed Montgomery.

The movie is practically a jumble of things, a scattershot fusing of haphazardly picked tired ideas that only make for a movie that feels like a copycat, rather than appreciating the few merits that it owns. The movie, running on a short time of ninety minutes, is watchable, an experience as though to have just dropped by.

VERDICT: C+

'Avatar' Sequels Filming Begins 2013

On a talk with The West Australian, writer-director James Cameron said that he is in good faith that Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will make film revolution. He made comparison of Jackson's The Lord of the Rings prequel-trilogy to his own movie Avatar, remaining strong as the top grossing movie of all time. He adds that The Hobbit will do for high-def filmmaking as what he did with Avatar"If there is acceptance of 48 (FPS), then that will pave the way for Avatar (sequels) to take advantage of it," Cameron said.

Avatar arguably is a very good movie; something meant to be viewed in the big screen for the world it has created, and the visuals that it uses. Cameron is currently in New Zealand, at work for the scripts of the two sequels for the blockbuster, attended Jackson's premiere. He says that he intend on finishing the two scripts by the end of February next year, and commence filming for the pair of movies later in the same year.

"I want to get these scripts nailed down, I don't want to be writing the movie in post production," he said. "We kind of did that on the first picture, I ended up cutting out a lot of scenes and so on and I don't want to do that again."

Everything is practically under wraps, but it's already been said that Cameron is intent on writing about the underwater life in Pandora. Check back for more Avatar news, as we're posting as details emerge.

Review: 'Silent Hill: Revelation 3D' - Spider Mannequins and Deformed Creatures

There are two things that Michael J. Bassett's Silent Hill: Revelation 3D seem to have done accurate. For one, it lives up to its title - it revealed a lot of back story. Perhaps too many of them that the plot began to be  too baffling and incomprehensible to even hold on to. For the other, it stayed true to its source material - perhaps too true that the movie, as a whole, began to feel more of a video game rather than a movie. Depending on your childhood, as you commence to exit the theaters, you either appreciate the movie's mediocre attempt of revealing what's left in Silent Hill; or head-scratch your way home.

Movies based on video games are often failing in nature, but Revelation seem to descend even to that already low norm. I could list video game movies that were agonies to attend to, but what if one of us dies out of so much loathe? Screw it, I'll tell you. Well for starters, Resident Evil movies, while they have their own merits, is one of the immortal franchises you really want to kill. Paul W.S. Anderson earned a wife in this movies, so it's not too hard to forgive, but director Uwe Boll who made the more terrible ones like In The Name of the King, BloodRayne and House of the Living Dead, is an entirely different story. As I have said, Silent Hill: Revelation 3D deserves a space on a list along these titles.

Sean Bean is in here, if that stands for any consolation. He always play the loving father if he's not tied to playing as a King in The Game of Thrones. In this he plays the father of Sharon (Adelaide Clemens), a teenager who is maimed by her nightmares. Constant reminders of "Silent Hill". The past (unbeknownst to her) that Sharon and the town share haunts her reality. Events take quick turns to evil only escalating the need to visit the "cursed" town.

Bean and his estimable presence, however, won't save the movie's poorly written script, overly contrived if not completely tacky characterization and wooden acting (majority of, would be coming from Clemens and Bean's Thrones co-star, Kit Harington and their uneven performances). Malcolm McDowell plays a demented creature in this; he later dies in a very laughable manner. The kind of joke that isn't, the kind of funny that isn't? Bassett, that was insulting.

Despite its brisk run time, Silent Hill: Revelation 3D remained an ordeal to watch.

In the very last frames of the movie, faded letters appear amid the foggy landscape. A road sign. In dull colors the sign board read: "You are now leaving Silent Hill," is this the end? I hope it is. Problem is, it's not the end. Of course it's not. The camera later tilts to the other side of the road sign, and so it read: "Welcome to Silent Hill". This, among all the cheap scares and shortage of efficient ones in the movie, is the only authentically frightful thing.

VERDICT: D

No consensus on whether ECB will cut rates next year: Reuters poll

LONDON (Reuters) - Whether the state of the euro zone economy will force the European Central Bank to cut its main interest rate to a new record low has economists more divided than ever, a Reuters poll showed on Wednesday

While only a handful of the 71 economists polled this week said the ECB will trim its main rate from 0.75 percent to 0.5 percent next Thursday, they were split down middle over the possibility of a rate cut early next year.

The findings were little changed from a poll two weeks ago.

There are two schools of thought. On one side are those who point to the raft of poor economic data for this quarter that signal a deepening recession, warranting another interest cut, no matter how small its impact might be.

And with the sovereign debt crisis still festering, there are few signs of an imminent turnaround for the euro zone economy. Most point to a worsening recession.

On the other side are those who say ECB President Mario Draghi has shown no inclination to ease monetary policy again, and is instead waiting to see how its bond-buying program - called Outright Monetary Transactions (OMT) - fares.

"The ECB has made clear that its policy is already very accommodative. Going forward, it puts most emphasis on improving the financial environment with the help of its OMT program," said Kristian Toedtmann, economist at DekaBank.

"Therefore, a further rate cut is less likely. A rate cut would only have major effects if the ECB also reduces the deposit rate, so that it becomes negative. At the moment, the ECB doesn't seem willing to do so."

Draghi declined to comment after the November policy meeting on whether markets were right to expect a rate cut next month, saying only that monetary policy was "very accommodative".

He also said the policymaking Governing Council had not discussed what it would do next year.

Thirty-four out of 71 economists forecast a rate cut by the end of the first quarter next year, turning to 36 by the end of the second quarter.

Those who said the ECB will ease policy again soon also cited easing inflation, which fell to 2.5 percent in October from 2.6 percent in September. Preliminary data for November due on Friday are expected to show another fall to 2.4 percent.

"We expect the ECB to cut interest rates further, as it is likely to become more obvious to the General Council inflation will undershoot the target of close, but below 2 percent in the medium term," said Juergen Michels, economist at Citi.

He expects the main refinancing rate will be trimmed to 0.5 percent in the first quarter of 2013, followed again by a cut to 0.25 percent in the second quarter, in combination with the deposit rate turning negative in mid-2013.

The ECB will also publish its latest staff forecasts for the euro zone economy at next Thursday's meeting.

A strong majority of economists - 34 out of 37 - said the ECB would chop its outlook for economic growth in 2013.

Google settles patent lawsuit from Immersion over Motorola use of haptic feedback

Motorola Droid RAZR family 2012

Immersion is known for guarding its haptic feedback patents with enthusiasm -- just ask Microsoft, among others. Motorola learned first-hand when Immersion sued over the use of basic haptic technology in May, but all that's water under the bridge now that Motorola's new parent Google is settling the matter out of court. While the exact sums aren't public, Google will pay Immersion to address any relevant past shipments, license the patents for future Motorola shipments and take care of "certain issues" with Google-badged hardware using the disputed vibration techniques. Immersion's end of the bargain is simply to end its legal action, including an ITC complaint, although the company makes clear that non-Motorola Android phones aren't covered by the deal. We're sure Google isn't happy to shoulder additional costs on top of its $12.5 billion Motorola acquisition, although it may see the settlement as a matter of establishing focus. After all, there's bigger fish to fry.

Google Voice Search For iPhone Commercial: How Accurate Is It, Anyway?

Back in August, when Google announced improvements to its voice search capabilities on Android and iOS, it released a slick little commercial showing all of the answers iPhone users could now expect its Google search app to return to them with a simple touch of a button and a few vibrations of the old vocal chords:

"Watch out, Siri," the commercial seemed to subtextually say. "Here comes a voice assistant for the iPhone that will actually understand you and deliver the answers you expect it to!" (Those two functions, of course, being the two main criticisms of Siri, which many users felt overpromised and underdelivered when it was introduced with the iPhone 4S in 2011).

In the past, we at HuffPostTech have tested several Siri commercials for ourselves, recreating each scene of the advertisements here at our offices in order to test their claims in real life and cutting together a quick video to show you the results. Can Siri really call you a rock god? (No). Inform Zooey Deschanel whether or not it is raining outside? (Yes). Tell John Malkovich a joke that will make him laugh from the very bottom of his soul? (Sort of).

Having thoroughly put Siri through her paces (with mostly positive results), then, we decided to give Google's refreshed and improved voice search application, which landed in the App Store this past October, a little trial. Below, you can check out the outcome.

A few notes on filming:
- We're using an iPhone 4S, about 10 months old.
- The phone is connected to our trusty AOL office Wi-Fi.
- We only ask each question once and use the video of the first take -- when it comes to voice search, you don't want to have to repeat yourself, so we don't.
- I tried to speak with the same neutral accent as the family in the video, preparing for a vacation to Cape Cod (way to relate to the blue-collar family, Google!).
- I drank a cup of hot tea before filming, so that my voice -- which someone who works for the New York Times once called "Pavarotti-esque" -- would come in clear on the iPhone's microphone.
- Wardrobe by Kmart.

And now, without further ado: Google's Voice Search for iOS Commercial gets put to the test. Press play to find out how Google performed...

As you can see on the video, we were able to replicate all but one of the voice searches shown in Google's original ad; after filming, we tried the mechanic query several more times but were unable to bring up local listings on any of our attempts. Overall, however, Google's voice search impressed me with its speed, both in finding an answer and transcribing the words I was speaking. It's almost startling how quickly your words appear on the screen after they leave your mouth, in fact.

Now if only there were some way to access that voice search straight from the home screen, without having to open up an app. I wonder if some other phone, with some other operating system, offers that function?

You can try out Google's voice search for iPhone yourself by downloading the Google app in the App Store right here.

SYNOPSIS

A few days after turning on the lanes, Oliver’s quaint getaway is undermined when he discovers that retail giant, Mega Value Mart, has plans to open their newest store right in the middle of the town’s most beloved property, Chautauqua Park.

Oliver is joined by a whimsically eccentric cast of Scarberry’s “finest” in a battle to preserve the park and his new way of life in this screwball comedy of municipal proportions.

Starring: Scott Docherty, Ashley Boehm, Comedian Mat Thornburg, with Joe Boyd (Hitting The Nuts, A Strange Brand of Happy), former Ben-Gal Cheerleader Melissa Scalia, and nearly all the members of improv comedy troupes Q-City Players, The Middle Child, and The Grapes of Laugh.

Casting for Peter Quill of 'Guardians of the Galaxy' Commences

After a few final talks of directing Guardians of the Galaxy, director James Gunn is officially aboard. It's only fitting to commence casting the lead character of the upcoming Marvel space-set superhero blockbuster. Deadline, in their exclusive report, tells that a couple of actors are already being considered in playing Peter Quill, better known as Star-Lord.

Among names are Joel Edgerton (Warrior, Zero Dark Thirty), Garrett Hedlund (TRON: Legacy), Jack Huston ("Boardwalk Empire"), James Marsden (X-Men, Tangled), Lee Pace (The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2), Eddie Redmayne (My Week with Marilyn), Jim Sturgess (Cloud Atlas) and Sullivan Stapleton (Animal Kingdom). Pace, of course would be my choice, if not Edgerton.

Quill is obviously the leader of the Guardians of the Galaxy. From earth, he travels to space after learning his father is from another world. Conflicts arise and Quill is thrust in the middle of a long battle against an evil alien race.

Drax the Destroyer, Groot, Rocket Racoon and Gamora are yet to find their actors, so check back later as we will post them all along the confirmation on who's going to be the reel Star-Lord. Guardians of the Galaxy targets an August 1, 2014 release.

BEN & HARRY: THE IMPORTANCE OF THE MAJOR MEN OF NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD

In 1961, a director out of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania was making his debut with an independent horror film by the title of Night of the Living Dead. Made on a budget of only one hundred and fourteen thousand dollars, George A. Romero’s first installment in his monumental and iconic “Living Dead” series, completely changed the face of the modern horror film and introduced audiences into the basis for the most popular subgenre of horror cinema. Romero’s slow moving, reanimated, undead humans surviving off of eating the flesh of the living became a staple for the modern zombie film and changed the face of undead monsters forever. Night of the Living Dead follows a group of people seeking refuge in an abandoned farmhouse amidst what would appear to be an epidemic where the recently deceased were reanimating, then attacking and eating the flesh of the living. An exposition on the true horrors of humanity as well as introducing a monster that had never been seen before, Night of the Living Dead is one of the most influential horror movies of all time.

Although George A. Romero consistently claims that his casting of Duane Johnson as the African-American protagonist “Ben” was solely based on the actor’s merit and wonderful audition, it would be giving the director a great disservice by not focusing on the importance of a leading African-American character as the main source of salvation, especially in 1968. At this time in America, society was slowly losing grasp on the hopeful ideals of a utopian society in the wake of the Vietnam War. The civil rights movement was growing in full force, but Americans were still hesitant to view African-American citizens on the same plane as their Caucasian counterparts. Ben single-handedly revolutionized the position of African Americans in the horror genre, and potentially, cinema as a whole. As a calm, collected, strong, and cool-headed hero overcoming an attack of not only monsters but also the hysterical antics of the white people surrounding him, Ben was one of the most prominent figures of African Americans in films portraying something outside of a parody or stereotype. Ben does the unthinkable for an African-American man at this time. Ben knocks a frantic white woman out cold, shoots a white man, acts as the voice of reason in the state of chaos, and stands as what would have been the sole survivor (if he hadn’t been mistaken for a ghoul and shot by a white militia). While it may be uncomfortable to address these issues in 2012 with an increasingly more welcoming attitude towards minority groups, the importance of Ben’s position cannot be ignored.

Throughout the course of the film, Harry Cooper is the antitheses of Ben’s character. Harry is distrusting, frantic, stubborn, selfish, and white. Harry was a strong symbol for the “old school” view of most of America at this time. A racist white man hiding out in the basement, Harry was a coward that used bullying and threatening actions as a means to achieve his wants. The older generations in 1968 were living amongst a growing youth of flower children fighting back the government and welcoming change at every turn. The old school disposition was hesitant to follow suit with their younger counterparts, and Harry Cooper is a shining beacon of that mentality.

One scene in particular, is the altercation between Ben and the Caucasian antagonist of the film, fellow refugee Harry Cooper. After a botched attempt for the two young adults trying to escape the ghouls by vehicle, Ben finds himself trapped outside the house after failing to save them. Harry Cooper and his family are the only ones inside the locked house, and Ben remains on the front porch trying to get in while fighting off the horde of the undead. Harry could easily open the door, but he stands hesitant in the opening of the cellar door with the option of either aiding in Ben’s safety, or letting him die. Ben frantically pummels himself into the doorway until finally kicking the door open. At a moment of change in character, Harry Cooper runs to the door to help Ben barricade it shut. Once the door is nailed shut, Ben immediately turns on Harry and begins to punch him numerous times before throwing him into an armchair and threatening to throw him to the ghouls.
This scene may have appeared to be nothing more than a cowardly man locking out another, but when analyzed further, it represents society’s attitudes towards change as a whole. Most of the initial shots of Harry show him in shadowed lighting while Ben is almost always in full light. It was as if Ben was the white light and Harry was left in the darkness. Harry and his family represent the traditional standards for the American family as set up by the ruling white class. The Cooper family remains within the home, a place of comfort, safety, and white familiarity. Outside of the confines of the home contained a world of potential danger, the unknown, and an African American man. When Ben kicks the door in, he’s a personification of the new changes that were happening to society whether or not the ruling white class was prepared for it. Ben is reality. He was a force to be reckoned with and his advancements weren’t going to be stopped.

Following Ben’s initial emergence, Harry is seen hiding in the doorway to the cellar. Harry had the choice between helping to keep out the monsters outside, or running even further downstairs into the cellar. The cellar would have solidified Harry’s desire for familiarity, but he reluctantly helps Ben nail the door shut. It can be interpreted that Harry had a change of heart when deciding to nail the door shut, but it could also be analyzed that his only motivation for barricading the door was to further protect himself and keep out the unknown. However, when Ben and Harry both nail the door closed, it symbolized that regardless of differences, the two were going to have to work together in order for things to move smoothly and to keep themselves protected. Once order was restored and Ben began to hit Harry, he was literally giving the old school mentality a reality slap. The terrors of the societal changes happening in 1968 were difficult for many of the older generations to handle and it wasn’t until the changes were forced upon them that they began to try and accept them. These cultural advancements needed to come with a heavy hand otherwise these changes wouldn’t have come at all.

'Riddick' International Poster Lands Online

While many details remain undisclosed, following a sneak peek to its title treatment/logo, an international poster for Riddick has already been released. Cineheroes, the French entertainment site, had got their hands on the poster first, and you can see it as you read to the very end of this post.

David Twohy's third chapter following Pitch Black and The Chronicles of Riddick, the movie will follow Vin Diesel as Riddick who has been left for dead in a desolate and lifeless planet. From there alien predators begin to take him down. Outnumbered and out-muscled, he flees off the menace and triggers an emergency beacon that eventually descends a group of mercenaries who are in for Riddick's head. Not a lucky guy, that Riddick, is he?

Directed and penned by Twohy, the movie taps Karl Urban, Jordi Molla, Matt Nable and Katee Sackhoff to join Diesel in the movie. Release date and all other details are still under wraps. Check back, though, we're posting the minute they emerge.

BlackBerry maker RIM loses patent dispute with Nokia

HELSINKI (Reuters) - BlackBerry maker Research In Motion Ltd (RIM) has lost a dispute over the use of Nokia Oyj patents, in a case which could halt the sale of RIM products if it does not reach a new royalties deal with the Finnish company.

The Swedish arbitrator ruled RIM was not entitled to make or sell mobile devices which can hook up to WiFi networks - using technology known in the trade as WLAN or wireless local access network systems - without first agreeing royalties with Nokia.

"RIM is liable to pay royalties and damages to Nokia for its ... sales of any subscriber terminals (handsets or tablets) ... compatible with the WLAN standard," the arbitrator said in the ruling, issued on November 6 but not publicized until Wednesday.

"RIM has not contested that it manufactures and sells products using WLAN in accordance with Nokia's WLAN patents," it added.

The decision is a boost for Nokia which is trying to increase its royalty income as its phone business slides, and the group said it had filed cases in the United States, Britain and Canada to enforce the arbitrator's ruling.

"This could have a significant financial impact to RIM, as all BlackBerry devices support WLAN," IDC analyst Francisco Jeronimo said.

A RIM spokesman declined comment.

A source close to RIM said the arbitration ruling was unlikely to have any immediate ramifications, as Nokia still has to fight a number of legal battles for the arbitration panel's ruling to be recognized in different countries.

But analysts said RIM would likely seek a royalty agreement with Nokia to avert any risk of sale bans.

"The arbitration decision is not appealable and the U.S. Court can be expected to enforce the judgment by issuing an injunction against RIM, which would effectively put RIM out of business," said Alexander Poltorak, chief executive of patent consultancy General Patent Corp.

"RIM has only one choice now - to license Nokia's patents," Poltorak said. "It should be a quick process. No substantive issue will be re-litigated. The U.S. court merely needs to enforce the verdict of the Swedish arbitration tribunal."

CONTRACT ROW

RIM, a smartphone pioneer, hopes new devices using BlackBerry 10 software, due early 2013, will rescue it from a prolonged slump in the face of competition from the likes of Apple Inc and Samsung Electronics Co Ltd.

"If a sales ban was imposed it would be a massive blow for RIM as it manages its transition to the new BlackBerry 10 software platform," said analyst Pete Cunningham at Canalys.

RIM promises its new devices will be faster than previous smartphones and will have a large catalogue of applications, which are crucial to the success of any new line of smartphones.

Shares in RIM were up 1.7 percent at $10.90 by 1146 ET on Nasdaq, while its Toronto-listed shares were up 11 Canadian cents at C$10.81.

Nokia said it signed a cross-license agreement with RIM covering cellular patents in 2003, a deal that was amended in 2008. RIM sought arbitration in March 2011 with the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce, arguing that license should be extended to cover WLAN patents.

Nokia, along with Ericsson and Qualcomm Inc, is among the leading patent holders in the wireless industry. Patent royalties generate annual revenue of about 500 million euros ($646 million) for Nokia.

Based on a Nortel patent sale and Google Inc's acquisition of Motorola Mobility, some analysts say Nokia's patent portfolio alone merits its current share price of around 2.50 euros.

However, the patent market has cooled since those deals were made and some industry experts say the "fair value" of patents in large portfolios is between $100,000 and $200,000, pricing Nokia's portfolio at up to 0.50 euros per share.

Nokia shares, which are heavily influenced by expectations of new smartphone model sales, were down 1 percent at 2.54 euros. The Wall Street Journal said the new Lumia 920 smartphone was worth considering but was heavy and thick.
