Twitter Link Roundup #160 ? Small Business, Social Media, Design ...

chimera

Every day on the crowdSPRING Twitter account and on my own Twitter account, I post links to posts or videos I enjoyed reading or viewing. These posts and videos are about logo design, web design, startups, entrepreneurship, small business, leadership, social media, marketing, and more! Here are some of the links that I?ve liked and shared this past week!

The image above shows a Chimera monkey, created by combining up to six distinct embryos from rhesus monkeys. The embryos were combined to help scientists understand the role that specific genes play in embryonic development. You can find this, and 26 other science fictions that became science facts in 2012, in the Other section below.

Let Newsletter Editors Help You Promote Your Book | Writing and ...

This week I contacted around 45 editors of magazines and newsletters for authors. You see, authors comprise my audience for several of my books, including my latest one, ?Talk Up Your Book.? In press release style (or media release, as they refer to it now), I introduced this book to editors, shared a few features and the benefits for published authors and asked the editors to review it for their publication. I also attached the ebook so they would have it at their fingertips. (Of course, most of the editors knew me because I have been writing articles for them?directed at my audience?for years as an expert in my field.)

The response has been quite exciting. Already, I?ve received enthusiastic emails from editors who can?t wait to read the book and write reviews. Some have asked me for articles so they can feature the book. A couple have already posted it as their recommended book for the month. Already, I notice that Amazon sales are up from what they were last week.

If you have a nonfiction book to promote, don?t overlook the great opportunities for promotion in magazines and newsletters related to the topic/theme of your book. Many of them are eager for information, news and resources that will help, educate, inform and/or entertain their audiences. And if you are already known to the editors through your article submissions, for example, they will be even more eager to promote what you produce.

If you are an author with a book to promote, you need this book in your library. It?s ?Talk Up Your Book, How to Sell Your Book Through Public Speaking, Interviews, Signings, Festivals Conferences and More.? You will learn how to locate and how to create opportunities to speak to your audience, tips and techniques for more successful public speaking and communication experiences, how to sell more books at book festivals, how to get speaking gigs as an expert at appropriate conferences and more. You?ll also learn how to get involved in webinars, podcasts and radio/TV interviews.

If you?ve been promoting a book for long, you know how important the personal approach is. Become more adept at presenting in person whether to a large group or one-on-one. Order your copy of ?Talk Up Your Book? today. (Soon to be on Kindle.) Read the 10 5-star reviews! http://amzn.to/ZMJndK

And start today contacting newsletters and magazines in your topic and negotiating some publicity for your amazing book.

Obama '08 campaign fined $375,000 by FEC

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama's 2008 campaign has been fined $375,000 by the Federal Election Commission for reporting violations related to a set of donations received during the final days of the campaign.

The fines are among the largest ever levied on a presidential campaign by the FEC and stem from a series of missing filings for nearly 1,200 contributions totaling nearly $1.9 million. Campaigns are required to file the reports during the final weeks of the campaign.

Obama campaign spokeswoman Katie Hogan said the 2008 campaign had more than 3 million donors and "the very few outstanding questions have now all been resolved."

The fines were first reported by Politico.

Findings could have important implications for global sea-level rise

A new study funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) finds that the western part of the massive West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) is experiencing nearly twice as much warming as previously thought.

The findings were published online this week in the journal Nature Geoscience. NSF manages the U.S. Antarctic Program (USAP) and coordinates all U.S. research and associated logistics on the southernmost continent and in the surrounding Southern Ocean.

The temperature record from Byrd Station, an unmanned scientific outpost in the center of the ice sheet, demonstrates a marked increase of 4.3 degrees Fahrenheit (2.4 degrees Celsius) in average annual temperature since 1958. That is three times faster than the average temperature rise around the globe.

This temperature increase is nearly double what previous research has suggested, and reveals--for the first time--warming trends during the summer months of the Southern Hemisphere (December through February), said David Bromwich, professor of geography at Ohio State University and senior research scientist at the Byrd Polar Research Center.

"Our record suggests that continued summer warming in West Antarctica could upset the surface mass balance of the ice sheet, so that the region could make an even bigger contribution to sea-level rise than it already does," said Bromwich.

"Even without generating significant mass loss directly, surface melting on the WAIS could contribute to sea level indirectly, by weakening the West Antarctic ice shelves that restrain the region's natural ice flow into the ocean."

Andrew Monaghan, study co-author and scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), said that these findings place West Antarctica among the fastest-warming regions on Earth.

"We've already seen enhanced surface melting contribute to the breakup of the Antarctic's Larsen B Ice Shelf, where glaciers at the edge discharged massive sections of ice into the ocean that contributed to sea level rise," Monaghan said. "The stakes would be much higher if a similar event occurred to an ice shelf restraining one of the enormous WAIS glaciers."

Researchers consider the WAIS especially sensitive to climate change, explained Ohio State University doctoral student Julien Nicolas. Since the base of the ice sheet rests below sea level, it is vulnerable to direct contact with warm ocean water. Its melting currently contributes 0.3 mm to sea level rise each year--second to Greenland, whose contribution to sea-level rise has been estimated as high as 0.7 mm per year.

Due to its location some 700 miles from the South Pole and near the center of the WAIS, Byrd Station is an important indicator of climate change throughout the region.

In the past, researchers haven't been able to make much use of the Byrd Station measurements, due to the fact that since the station was establishment in 1957, it hasn't always been occupied. So, its data were incomplete, to the point that nearly one third of the temperature observations were missing for the time period of the study. A year-round automated station was installed in 1980, but it has experienced frequent power outages, especially during the long polar night, when its solar panels can't recharge.

Bromwich and two of his graduate students, along with colleagues from the National Center for Atmospheric Research and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, corrected the past Byrd temperature measurements and used corrected data from a computer atmospheric model and a numerical analysis method to fill in the missing observations.

Aside from offering a more complete picture of warming in West Antarctica, the study suggests that if this warming trend continues, melting will become more extensive in the region in the future, Bromwich said.

While the researchers work to fully understand the cause of the summer warming at Byrd Station, the next step is clear, he added.

"West Antarctica is one of the most rapidly changing regions on Earth, but it is also one of the least known," he said. "Our study underscores the need for a reliable network of meteorological observations throughout West Antarctica, so that we can know what is happening--and why--with more certainty."

Forecast: Leatherface Battles Bilbo, Django This Weekend

Most audiences typically use the first weekend of January to catch up on December releases, so studios have taken to releasing genre titles as counterprogramming. This year is no exception: the only brand-new nationwide release this weekend is horror remake Texas Chainsaw 3D, which will reach 2,654 locations beginning at 10 p.m. on Thursday. It has a good chance of taking first place, though it's going to face tough competition from The Hobbit, Django Unchained and Les Miserables. Meanwhile, fracking drama Promised Land expands nationwide, and The Impossible and Not Fade Away will also each reach over 500 theaters.

In 1974, the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre earned $30.9 million—the equivalent of $128 million adjusted for inflation—and introduced the world to iconic horror villain Leatherface. After a series of disappointing follow-ups, Michael Bay produced a 2003 remake that opened to $28.1 million on its way to a very good $80.6 million. Three years later, prequel The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning earned just $39.5 million, suggesting audiences had once again tired of the concept.

Texas Chainsaw 3D
technically takes place within the time frame of the original franchise, which is similar to the situation with The Thing (2011). Unfortunately, the marketing doesn't really communicate this, and instead the movie basically looks like a less-inspired remake of the 2003 remake. Without doing much to differentiate itself (aside from the 3D, which is an after-thought), it's unlikely to match the 2003 movie's $28.1 million debut.

Still, the marketing has done some solid outreach to the core horror movie fanbase, and these types of movies tend to perform very well in January: on this same weekend last year, The Devil Inside debuted to $33.7 million, and in January 2009 Lionsgate opened My Bloody Valentine 3-D to $21.2 million. Lionsgate is currently expecting around $15 million for Texas Chainsaw 3D, though don't be shocked if it winds up above $20 million.

Promised Land
expands nationwide to 1,675 theaters following a disappointing opening weekend in limited release ($173,915 from 25 locations). While Matt Damon is a fairly big star, he's definitely capable of being involved in a dud if the movie itself doesn't have a clear hook, which seems to be the case with Promised Land. It's also unfortunate that this is a prestige movie that's lacking prestige—it has no awards nominations in sight, and is currently at a terrible 46 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. A Top 10 finish is likely, though anything over $5 million would be a big surprise.

The Impossible
and Not Fade Away are both making significant expansions in to 572 and 565 theaters, respectively (just shy of the 600 theaters necessary for nationwide classification). The Impossible has the most momentum: it saw its per-theater average jump from $9,588 to $12,172 from weekend one to two, which suggests word-of-mouth is good. Still, Summit seems to be saving any major marketing push for after a possible Academy Award nomination next week for Naomi Watts, and it won't make the Top 10 this weekend.

Not Fade Away
, meanwhile, isn't going to do much business at all. The Sopranos creator David Chase's big-screen debut averaged just $2,884 at 19 locations last weekend, and if it miraculously holds that average it will wind up with less than $1.7 million. Instead, expect it to wind up well under $1 million.

Forecast (Jan. 4-6)

1. Django Unchained - $19.9 million (-34%)
2. Texas Chainsaw - $19.7 million
3. The Hobbit - $18.8 million (-41%)
4. Les Miserables - $17.2 million (-37%)

Bar for Success

If Texas Chainsaw 3D matches The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning's opening attendance levels it will wind up with over $22 million, which seems like a fair threshold

Can diet beat depression?

Jan. 3, 2012 ? Research into diet and depression should follow the model of studies into diet and cardiovascular risk. So argue Almudena Sanchez-Villegas and Miguel A Mart?nez-Gonz?lez in an opinion piece, in BioMed Central?s open access journal BMC Medicine this week.

The authors, from the universities of Las Palmas and Navarra, assess the evidence into links between diet and depression and find it lacking. ?Depression is similar in many aspects to heart disease? they explained. ?Both are associated with low-grade inflammation, endothelial dysfunction and worse lipid profiles. This tends to suggest that the underlying causes, such as a diet high in trans fats, are also the same.?

Though there is plenty of evidence that there is an association, and that fast food increases risk of depression (while the Mediterranean diet decreases it), most of these studies do not show causality. Almudena Sanchez-Villegas continued, ?It is difficult to be sure that the diet is responsible for depression ? it could be that depressed people make bad food choices. Other study problems include ?confounders? which may influence dietary habits, such as marital status, exercise, alcohol (or smoking), medical conditions and social networks. Or simply genetics.?

Miguel A Mart?nez-Gonz?lez concluded, ?To address these issues we need long term, randomised clinical studies similar to ones successfully conducted for diet and cardiovascular disease risk. Only then will we really understand the impact of diet of depression.?

Flu? Malaria? Disease forecasters look to the sky

NEW YORK (AP) ? Only a 10 percent chance of showers today, but a 70 percent chance of flu next month.

That's the kind of forecasting health scientists are trying to move toward, as they increasingly include weather data in their attempts to predict disease outbreaks.

In one recent study, two scientists reported they could predict ? more than seven weeks in advance ? when flu season was going to peak in New York City. Theirs was just the latest in a growing wave of computer models that factor in rainfall, temperature or other weather conditions to forecast disease.

Health officials are excited by this kind of work and the idea that it could be used to fine-tune vaccination campaigns or other disease prevention efforts.

At the same time, experts note that outbreaks are influenced as much, or more, by human behavior and other factors as by the weather. Some argue weather-based outbreak predictions still have a long way to go. And when government health officials warned in early December that flu season seemed to be off to an early start, they said there was no evidence it was driven by the weather.

This disease-forecasting concept is not new: Scientists have been working on mathematical models to predict outbreaks for decades and have long factored in the weather. They have known, for example, that temperature and rainfall affect the breeding of mosquitoes that carry malaria, West Nile virus and other dangerous diseases.

Recent improvements in weather-tracking have helped, including satellite technology and more sophisticated computer data processing.

As a result, "in the last five years or so, there's been quite an improvement and acceleration" in weather-focused disease modeling, said Ira Longini, a University of Florida biostatistician who's worked on outbreak prediction projects.

Some models have been labeled successes.

In the United States, researchers at Johns Hopkins University and the University of New Mexico tried to predict outbreaks of hantavirus in the late 1990s. They used rain and snow data and other information to study patterns of plant growth that attract rodents. People catch the disease from the droppings of infected rodents.

"We predicted what would happen later that year," said Gregory Glass, a Johns Hopkins researcher who worked on the project.

More recently, in east Africa, satellites have been used to predict rainfall by measuring sea-surface temperatures and cloud density. That's been used to generate "risk maps" for Rift Valley fever ? a virus that spreads from animals to people and in severe cases can cause blindness or death. Researchers have said the system in some cases has given two to six weeks advance warning.

Last year, other researchers using satellite data in east Africa said they found that a small change in average temperature was a warning sign cholera cases would double within four months.

"We are getting very close to developing a viable forecasting system" against cholera that can help health officials in African countries ramp up emergency vaccinations and other efforts, said a statement by one of the authors, Rita Reyburn of the International Vaccine Institute in Seoul, South Korea.

Some diseases are hard to forecast, such as West Nile virus. Last year, the U.S. suffered one of its worst years since the virus arrived in 1999. There were more than 2,600 serious illnesses and nearly 240 deaths.

Officials said the mild winter, early spring and very hot summer helped spur mosquito breeding and the spread of the virus. But the danger wasn't spread uniformly. In Texas, the Dallas area was particularly hard-hit, while other places, including some with similar weather patterns and the same type of mosquitoes, were not as affected.

"Why Dallas, and not areas with similar ecological conditions? We don't really know," said Roger Nasci of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. He is chief of the CDC branch that tracks insect-borne viruses.

Some think flu lends itself to outbreak forecasting ? there's already a predictability to the annual winter flu season. But that's been tricky, too.

Seasonal flu reports come from doctors' offices, but those show the disease when it's already spreading. Some researchers have studied tweets on Twitter and searches on Google, but their work has offered a jump of only a week or two on traditional methods.

In the study of New York City flu cases published last month in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the authors said they could forecast, by up to seven weeks, the peak of flu season.

They designed a model based on weather and flu data from past years, 2003-09. In part, their design was based on earlier studies that found flu virus spreads better when the air is dry and turns colder. They made calculations based on humidity readings and on Google Flu Trends, which tracks how many people are searching each day for information on flu-related topics (often because they're beginning to feel ill).

Using that model, they hope to try real-time predictions as early as next year, said Jeffrey Shaman of Columbia University, who led the work.

"It's certainly exciting," said Lyn Finelli, the CDC's flu surveillance chief. She said the CDC supports Shaman's work, but agency officials are eager to see follow-up studies showing the model can predict flu trends in places different from New York, like Miami.

Despite the optimism by some, Dr. Edward Ryan, a Harvard University professor of immunology and infectious diseases, is cautious about weather-based prediction models. "I'm not sure any of them are ready for prime time," he said.
