Universal first brought in Safe House early this year, a suspenseful action/thriller starring Ryan Reynolds (Green Lantern) and Denzel Washington (Se7en). In contrast to how critics have received the pic, Universal is all-hearts in making a second film, which up to now will remain untitled.
One of [Universal's] biggest domestic hits of 2012, Safe House, about a CIA agent (Reynolds) assigned in keeping a CIA renegade (Washington) safe, grossed approximately $120 million in the US summing up to $200 million worldwide.
The potential pic will have to go to a completely different direction, but will definitely expand the workplace for impressive Reynolds as Matt Weston from the originally claustrophobic. Reynolds is in negotiations to come back for the follow-up movie, while Washington is too, although continuity will be an issue with the end-result of Washington's character.
David Guggenheim returns to write the follow-up script. Besides this, all details are to be posted as we hear.
The original David Espinosa (Easy Money) if green-lighted will have to go through some walls with the script. Especially because it would be stupid to have another renegade under Weston's protection. As it usually go, studios and writers always find a way to create acceptable continuity...or not.
