Sounds like the original trio of Chris Wink, Matt Goldman and Phil Stanton will carry the movie and that shooting is slated to begin in June 2009 and a release a year later (June 2010). The aim is for an IMAX 3D release initially followed later with a wider 3D release.
Not much is known about the direction they will be taking except that it will be made specifically for 3D and be based on what they are famous for: Science and comedy.
Matt Goldman: "It's going to have a story, believe it or not. It's going to have real science content, and we're excited about being in the neuroscience space. We had a lot of ideas of things coming at you, splashing of paint, explosions of color," he added. "It's a complete mesh of everything that we love."
Looks like these musicals will be using 3D for it's gimmick value - which really isn't all that bad if you consider their original shows. It is when 3D is used for gimmicks where they are not needed that the experience erodes somewhat for me.
The Blue Man Group have been playing in NYC for 17 years and also have shows in 3 other US cities, Japan and Germany. They will partially finance their own movie.
So all the power to them! I have yet to see their show, but now I have an even stronger reason to.
