Info Post

As far as joint features by Vice Ganda (Praybeyt Benjamin) and TV/film director Wenn Deramas (This Guy's In Love With You Mare) go, Sisterakas falls flat. The venture feels very crammed and consequently became a forcible entry to the film fest. While Deramas has been constantly rebuked of his exceedingly campy direction, there is always something left - charisma and comedy. Sadly, this isn't always the case - not in Sisterakas at least.

Vice Ganda and Ai-Ai Delas Alas (Ang Tanging Ina) play as childhood friends Totoy and Detty, parted by the consequences of their parents having an affair with each other. Totoy and his mother are ultimately deserted. Fast forward to the current year, Totoy is now head to a successful fashion line. He changes his name to Bernice. Detty is unemployed and eventually applies to be Bernice's assistant, without knowing their half-siblings. Roselle (Kris Aquino), an equally successful and competitive fashion magnate who owns Bernice's company's nemesis, enters the picture.  You can guess what happens next. Correct answer. Trouble.

In its entirety, the movie is unfunny as it is underwritten. Vice Ganda, having been appearing on the small screen well nigh all the time, seemed to be gradually losing the wits that we all were compelled for. Tired jist and slapstick comedy make this seem an unjustifiable fact. Delas Alas is very loud in this movie and it's exasperating. She is effortlessly out shined by Aquino, self-aware that the movie is mindless at best, fearlessly making fun of herself on screen. Kathryne Bernardo, Daniel Padilla and Tirso Cruz III were just there for the purpose of being there.

The script is utterly driven by formula as Deramas's movies are. Problem -> Long sets of wearying punchlines -> Resolution. His previous features at least worked because they tackled sensitive subjects in an upbeat and enthusiastic fashion. While Sisterakas may be considered in this league still, it's too lightweight to hold on to its merits, if any, let alone its hiccups.

VERDICT: C+
