Info Post

On a video recently released via YouTube, Pan's Labyrinth director Guillermo Del Toro introduces the short that inspired the upcoming horror flick Mama, opening this January. You can watch the short film below.

The short, directed by Andy Muschetti, has expert atmospherics and an ample amount of nail-biting moments. It runs quickly on three minutes, but you never shudder more in your life (no exaggeration here). It follows two siblings, consumed by the fear for their ghastly mother lurking around.

This is stretched into one full feature film, written and directed by the same person (credited as Andres Muschetti), with Del Toro producing. Del Toro has already been behind some effective horrors (as producer) like Julia's Eyes. It stars Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty), Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Oblivion), Megan Charpentier (Resident Evil: Retribution) and Isabelle Nelisse.

The movie is described as:

Five years ago, sisters Victoria and Lilly vanished from their suburban neighborhood without a trace. Since then, their Uncle Lucas and his girlfriend, Annabel, have been madly searching for them. But when, incredibly, the kids are found alive in a decrepit cabin, the couple wonders if the girls are the only guests they have welcomed into their home.

As Annabel tries to introduce the children to a normal life, she grows convinced of an evil presence in their house. Are the sisters experiencing traumatic stress, or is a ghost coming to visit them? How did the broken girls survive those years all alone? As she answers these disturbing questions, the new mother will find that the whispers she hears at bedtime are coming from the lips of a deadly presence.

Mama opens on theaters January 18th.
