Pharrell Williams, Chad Hugo and Shay Haley, forming the eclectic rap trio N.E.R.D.(short for “No-one Ever Really Dies”) are back with their fourth studio album titled ‘Nothing’. This album personifies thrash metal, elegant rhythm and blues and electro rap wrapped in songwriting structures and production qualities that recall Still & Nash and The Doors’ wall of sound amongst a plethora of classic influences.

‘Nothing’ explores different themes, all ranging from 'feel good' summer music to songs about war and peace. The energetic “Party People”, starts off the album with a hype groove and rumbling bass line. The track is immediately followed by the sensual track, “Hypnotize U”, in which Pharrel provides smooth vocals over an even smoother and hypnotic beat. It also features Canadian recording artist Nelly Furtado in the groovy party track “Hot & Fun.” Pharrell explained the album cover as "a mix of so many things. The feathers represent the peace, and the helmet represents the war. It's like where we are right now. There's a lot of war, that people can't necessarily explain. The economy sucks, girls are still beautiful. We wanted to make music that reflected that. So people can look back twenty years from now, and say 'this is what was going on".

"If you want to know how to run something, you gotta work in the mailroom first," says Pharrell. "I don't want that to come out the wrong way but playing live is our mailroom, it's our laboratory, it's where you see the connection between music and your songs and the fans and the reaction you get all in one place." "There's no greater feeling than looking out at an audience, whether it's in New York, Australia or Japan, and seeing kids - black, white, Latino, male, female, whatever -shouting the words back to you or rockin' out and having a good time," says Shae. "It is the most beautiful thing." ‘Nothing’ not only taps into that kind of connection with their growing fan-base but also reaches back to the days of ‘In Search Of’- but more in spirit than in actual sound. "It's so 1970s, multi-flavored denim, when there weren't so many rules." Pharrell describes. Shae adds that if ‘In Search Of’ drew inspiration from the likes of Earth, Wind & Fire and Steely Dan, then NOTHING "is more like The Doors or the band America." The current single from the album “Hypnotize U” gives off an irresistible sensual vibe that became another strong hit that’s heating up our country’s airwaves.

At its best, N.E.R.D. fulfills its goal of fusing disparate strands of sounds into something seamless and delectably experimental. With each new album, you can always hear more sophisticated musical influences and stronger vocals. Throughout this album, you get thrown back and forth into musical bliss where N.E.R.D provides a song for any moment and it is definitely a piece of treat!
