As we noted in her brand new Billboard cover story, The Black Eyed Peas' Fergie has come a long way since her tween days on Kids Incorporated, and it's as true of her fashion sense as it is of her career. Stacy Ferguson has undergone a vast style shift from her girl-group days of velour and polyester to her "Duchess" days of couture and cocktail wear. Since 2001, after leaving Wild Orchid and joining the Peas, Fergie has been both a b-girl and a metallic vixen, continuing to surprise us with her edgy fashion decisions on and off the carpet. But the pictures speak louder than words, so check out shots of several of her looks over the years.
Stacy Ann Ferguson achieved success at a young age while starring in the children's series, Kids Incorporated. At the time, Ferguson was a cheerleader, straight-A student, spelling bee champion and Girl Scout. Post Kids Inc., Stacy joined the group Wild Orchid for nine years till she became Fergie, a new member of the Black Eyed Peas.
(Fergie on the red carpet with Wild Orchid in 1998) This foily polyester disaster is ill-fitting and unflattering; when combined with the unfortunate late-90's trend of platform flip-flops, we have a messy blunder. This matchy matchy Destiny's Childish fit becomes instantly dated, and Fergie soon moves on to her solo career.
Fergie first emerged in Black Eyed Peas in the early 'ids wearing tracksuits and other street-wear accouterments. Fergie rocked variations of the b-girl chick for sometime, sporting shell toes, Kangol visors, wife-beaters and hoops.
Fergie mixed the b-girl with the rave culture of the late 90's/early ids in this outfit, combining 'rave' pants with a cornrow up-do at Christina Aguilera's after-party in 2003.
At the 2003 MTV Europe Music Awards, Fergie fems it up and rocks a flamenco-queen meets kris-kross for the red carpet. Still maintaining an alt-hip-hop look, she throws some heels into the mix instead of her traditional sneaks.
At the 2004 MTV Video Music Awards, Fergie drops the sidekick-b-girl facade. The outfit remains playful yet sexual. The nod to 1950's poodle skirt culture mixed with a wordplay on a legume is ridiculous but oddly likable.
In 2006 Fergie reverts to her original b-girl but adds some fancy footwear and a softer hairdo. The wavering between cutie to looking like she's about to do a head-spin dies down after the release of her solo album in 2006.
At the Grammy's in 2006, Fergie wears her first minimal wardrobe. Without a load of distracting accessories, Fergie appears classy and mature in this nude sheath.
At the 2006 MTV Video Music Awards Fergie pulls a Britney and fancies herself a naughty schoolgirl. A tad passe and seemingly inappropriate for a red carpet but still incredibly flattering.
At the 2007 Grammy's, Fergie looks sophisticated and feminine in this metallic Badgley Mischka cocktail dress. Sequined metallics were one of the top trends during Grammy's in 2007; Fergie progressively becomes more trend and brand conscious, making her fashion choices a top priority and attending fashion shows in both Paris and New York. Fergie hooks up with model agency Wilhelmina, connecting her with designers Marchesa, Calvin Klein and DSquared.
Another trend that received a lot of love/flak was that of the high-waisties. Fergie raised some conflicting opinions about this outfit, but overall these pants combined with another confusing fashion trend at the time--suspenders serving no purpose--flatter her figure.
Making fashion an important aspect of her persona, Fergie visits New York City's Fashion Week. Here, Fergie attends the Marc Jacobs Fall/Winter 2008 Show fully Jacobs'd out. She develops personal relationships with designers such as Karl Lagerfeld, and soon branches out into designing her own bags and accessories.
At the 2008 Fashion gala at the Met, Fergie arrives in a batman-esque Calvin Klein gown, looking appropriately like a super hero. Fergie is often photographed shopping in Calvin Klein boutiques after her hook-up with the designer thanks to Wilhelmina in 2006.
Fergie wears a vibrant Etro dress during the 2008 Teen Choice Awards. As opposed to her form-fitting gowns of the past, this Italian piece is a perfect choice for the youthful and Californiaesque affair.
Fergie's embracing of popular denim trends continues with these J Brand ripped tie-dye skinny jeans, also worn by musical fashion maven, Gwen Stefani. Fergie trades her beachy dirty-blonde locks for a sleek and stark dark mane.
Through Wilhelmina, Fergie launches her own shoe line with Brown Shoe Co. (Reba McEntire and Carlos Santana have also launched through Brown...) and promotes the brand at Nordstrom in Los Angeles in 2009.
Fergie skips the 2009 MTV Movie Awards to attend the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards in Japan, sporting a Marc Jacobs metallic space-suit in aquamarine.
Continuing in space, Fergie looks like she's about to take flight in these silky harems and ski-goggle glasses. She's definitely taking some tips from the older 'Peas fashion days, but upgrading a tad.
Fergie arrives at Apl.de.Ap's launch of his Jeepney Music Record Label in Los Angeles in 2009 wearing a metallic, vintage-pleated cocktail dress.
Looking rather birdy in this nude and feathery cocktail dress, Fergie attends 'Champions Who Change Women's Lives' at Cipriani in 2009. This piece strays away from the overtly modern and metallic, and softens Fergie's look considerably.
Reversing the previous look, Fergie chooses a metallic and literally sharp mini-dress by The Blonds, who have also outfitted Rihanna in spikes. Although definitely complex, the dress doesnt overwhelm, specifically when paired with simple black gloves and pumps.
Fergie dons a Camila & Marc mini dress for the LA Premiere of "Nine". Her slicked ponytail combined with her metallic, geometric earrings complements the sexy LBD.
Continuing with the sexy mini-dress, Fergie wears a Yves Klein blue mini with metallic snake by Pucci. Ditching the elegant for something a little more modern and sexy, Fergie is appropriately spacey for her Black Eyed Peas counterparts.
After making a red carpet entrance at the 2010 American Music Awards wearing a Falguni and Shane Peacock feathery affair, Fergie returned to the press room wearing a ravishing Zuhair Murad couture bodice with minimalist makeup and hair.
At the 2010 Women in Music Awards presented by Billboard, Fergie opts for a pantsuit with leather fringe bag instead of a dress.
