The recent NU107 Rock Awards was memorable for a couple of big news. One, it may have been the last since NU107 signed off last November 7 after 23 years of setting trends in the rock scene. Second, which sounds more celebrating, is the record set by the country’s biggest record label MCA Music: taking home more than half of the trophies given that night and bagging major awards.

With artists from its stable, particularly Franco and Tanya Markova, bagging the major categories, MCA Music won an unprecedented 9 out of 16 awards, certainly no mean feat. The triumph created instant buzz as it also served as a testament to the label’s domination in current local music business. It can be recalled that its president Ricky Ilacad accepted his post four years ago on the condition that he would be allowed to propagate a domestic line of artists. With this NU107 Rock Awards record, the realization of his vision found its destiny.

“When we sign up artists, we consider things like how good they sing and how they present themselves and speak on stage,” said the widely revered executive in an interview. “We’re very happy with our line-up and I feel glad that our local stable has progressed much in just few years of being out.”

During that festive and poignant night at the NBC Tent at the Fort last October 29, MCA label mates Franco and Tanya Markova bagged a handful of big awards each and bested other strong contenders for the categories they were in.

Franco, the super group rock formula fronted by Cebuano vocalist Franco Reyes, took perhaps the night’s four biggest citations, including the coveted "Artist of the Year" title. The five-man ensemble was likewise recognized for “Album of the Year,” “Song of the Year” for the track “This Gathering” and “Listener’s Choice” award which proved that the group is not only critically hailed but popular among rock fans as well.

Shock-pop band Tanya Markova, with all their face paint and concept clothes, collected a big three of their own: "Best New Artist," "Best Live Act," and "Best Music Video (for Disney)." With their singles “Picture Picture” and “Disney” solidifying their entry to the world of competitive, out-of-the-box musicality, the group shook the NU Awards stage even prior to the show proper.

Franco, on the other hand, reiterated the message that though practically new in the music scene, they already belong to the big boys club as they showcased their hard rocking stuff during the main show. Urbandub, another band off the MCA stable of highly achieving local acts, excelled in the individual efforts department, with vocalist Gabby Alipe winning the "Vocalist of the Year" plum while bassist Lalay Lim, a woman at that, emerging as the topnotcher among “Bassist of the Year” nominees.
