Star Cinema, the same studio that brought us the critically pleasing--though cliches are still visible--'Anak' top-billed by current Batangas Governor: Vilma Santos and Claudine Baretto back in 2000, is presenting another flick that centers about, well, what else Filipinos are drawn into: family.

Medy, desperate to find ways to keep her family at comfort, struggles in an unfriendly (to her) country of America and work for some pretty dime. With years that passed, she hurdles to surpass obstacles and finally was able to come home to the Philippines. Her son, totally wrecked by her departure, and her delayed arrival, and her daughter efforts to know her mother. Her husband, don't get her started.

A bigger revelation (well, a revelation in the film is what happened to Medy's husband) is that Pokwang, playing Medy, was tastefully raw. Understandably for comediennes who stores negativity inside them to create a good ol' laugh-a-ton, almost everyday, plus she is a mom too, who hurdles to keep her daughter at comfort. However, the material collectively is lacking depth: nothing noticeable development within characters; the storyline is typical, resembling greatly to 'Anak' (which by the way was absurdly mentioned in the film) but this film is different. It eases to talk about matters particularly 'illegal migration' and deception in some parts of the film--hence, I believe, this film ushers us through realism. The lines (which was notably one of the marks of a 'Star Cinema' movie) had nothing really that is in fact good besides the lines that you see in the trailer. On the contrary, some heartfelt moments are almost moving, and tearfully sad.

A Mother's Story is a quality family drama, that is sure families, specifically mothers and children, will relate to. However, Filipino Cinema cliches goes with the package, so caution. 3 stars.
