In celebration of its 11th year anniversary, the Philippine Opera Company (POC) proudly announces its 3rd Opera and Concert Season.

The season is set to open on August 2011 with Leonard Bernstein’s CANDIDE. POC and Theater Down South join forces in Bernstein’s extravagant comedy opera. Based on Voltaire’s novel of 1759, Candide is hilarious, harsh and hedonistic, and features some of American music theater’s greatest moment.

Also to be presented is OPERANOW … THE NEXT GENERATION this show will display the most beautiful music ever written exquisitely performed in a spectacular and exuberant 21st century showcase. The result is an enchanted world where thrilling music is brought to life in an alluring, playful and electrifying evening that will delight opera enthusiasts and newcomers alike.

OPERA GALA 2012 A one-night-only Gala Concert. This glamorous event promises to be the social highlight of the season!

Philippine Opera Company closes the season with Bizet’s popular opera, CARMEN. Carmen, the lines between passionate illusion and real life become intricately tangled with rejection, jealousy, mutiny, and demise. Your senses will be awakened like never before, and never again will you experience Georges Bizet’s unforgettable gypsy in quite the same way.

For the past 11 years, POC has been the only opera company in the Philippines; being the only company to mount an opera season to date. This year, the Philippine Opera Company celebrates a decade of exquisitely weaving and delivering fine and world-class entertainment to the very discriminate and consistent audience. Furthermore, POC has seen a sudden uptrend in the awareness and appreciation of opera and classical related performances by Filipinos; particularly the young educated segment of society these past recent years. This favorable development has led POC to launch the first Opera season in 2006.

Founded in 1999, it’s being managed by Philippine Opera Company’s Artistic Director, Karla Gutierrez. POC is committed to extending opera beyond its elitist pedestal by performing in malls, community centers, parks, and schools as well as in theatres thereby making opera more accessible to more audience.

The goal of the Philippine Opera Company is committed to developing a new generation of classical singers and audiences, and to develop our own Filipino style of presenting opera. POC also helps develop opera appreciation among Filipinos by performing outreach programs for schools, government agencies and private corporate organizations throughout the country with the funding from the outreach arm of POC, Friends of Philippine Opera Foundation.

The Philippine Opera Company‘s new home called the Opera Haus is also undergoing construction and set to open before the end of 2011. Located at Bautista Street in Makati. The Opera Haus designed by Architect Willie Chua, is an over-all performing arts center in Makati City. The 3-storey building will have a 140-square meter rehearsal hall, which could be used as a venue for series of soirees and mini recitals. It will also have a music library, conference and audio-visual room, band rehearsal rooms, voice and musical instrument studios. The rooftop will be used for after soiree reception and other social functions among performing artists.

Just recently POC’s new group the Opera Belles, an all female classical / cross-over group, signed a record and management contract with multi-national label Sony Music. The group is composed of 3 classically trained young women and will release their debut album soon.
