The third season of The Walking Dead concerns the remainders of mankind, particularly Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and the rest of the survivors who are forced to become a "fortified" unit in order to continue surviving the undead menace. The show, adapted by Frank Darabont (director of The Shawshank Redemption and The Mist), will also shine the light to some comic book characters like Michonne and The Governor played respectively by Danai Gurira and David Morrissey, in this season.
RECAP
In the premiere episode, we see Rick and the remnants of his group moving house to house on the quest to find a safe place for them to settle temporarily. This is very much important because as you may recall, his wife Lori (Sarah Wayne Callies) is pregnant and only a couple of weeks due. They end up pursuing a criminal institution and settles there. Unbeknownst to them is that the walkers they have killed in order to make the move is only around a third of what number and ferocity of the remainders of the walkers are still in the deeper parts of the institution. Meanwhile, Michonne, tries to help Andrea (Laurie Holden) who is currently sick.
REVIEW
The episode is admittedly the best in the series so far, and I'm quite happy about what I've seen on it. I mean, I can expect that a lot from creator/developer Darabont and episode director Ernest Dickerson who has been increasingly comfortable with handling the show. He's also done Dexter, so he appears estimable to some extent.
The characters are well handled - the entanglements of each other are competently fleshed out, especially with Lori's honest coming out to Hershel (Scott Wilson), her fear that if all of them carries the virus, then what if her child comes out undead? Or what if it is undead inside her and in what chances that it would just rip off of inside her? We also get to see Carol (Melissa McBride) and Daryl (Norman Reedus) share some moment of a relationship we have yet to define. But frankly, they'd make a fine couple. I mean, it'd be something fresh.
Speaking of, the show has offered a lot of new things not only to itself but the genre, too. The makers of the show understood the need of humanity, now that Rick and co is required to be as efficient in killing zombies as possible whatever it takes. To do this, Michonne, whose character from the comics is far more ferocious and vicious, shows humanity and empathy, in trying to help with the troubled Andrea. The episode, too, is an astounding orchestra of a variety of delightful zombie kills - best by far in the series. The kills were deliciously gruesome from melee, gunshots and Daryl's signature kill: bows and arrows.
In entirety, the episode is a testament that the series is more than worth to watch out for.
