The original plan was to have Rupert Wyatt reuniting with the Rise of the Planet of the Apes team and create the sequel. But due to some billing issues Wyatt left the project and was replaced by Matt Reeves (Cloverfield). Deadline says that Reeves made to the top of the list of directors prospected as replacements--the list includes J Blakeson (The Disappearance of Alice Creed), Guillermo Del Toro (Hellboy, Pacific Rim), Juan Antonio Bayona (The Impossible), Jeff Nichols (Take Shelter) and Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later). The choice was initially baffling, picking Reeves over Del Toro and Fresnadillo and others, but if you think about it, Reeves have some accomplishments of his own.
He did a found-footage monster film Cloverfield which was a pretty superior among its sub-genre and the found-footage hype per se. He also did the stylish remake of Let The Right One In [now titled Let Me In] with great inspiration that you sometimes dig the remake more than you dig the original vamp-love story. Finally, he collabed with Star Trek director J.J. Abrams in creating Felicity. Although Reeves had a number of commitments like The Twilight Zone remake and two other films, the studio is confident to stick with him and continue on with a planned release date of May 23rd 2014.
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, a natural sequel to the first one, Rise will be running on a script by Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver. More updates as we hear more. (credits to ScreenCrush.com for the photo)
